I've using Outlook 2002 for several years. The pst file is usually hundreds of Megabytes or even bigger. I had several incidents of crash. Now I am ready to get a new computer. I wonder which version of Outlook I should get, from version 2000 through 2007. What I care most is the stability/reliability, and I need it to run smoothly while managing thousands of emails.

Any inputs are appreciated.

Using Word as your email editor was very problematic in version previous to OL 2003. W2007 is probably best from that point of view because it no longer uses Word: rather it uses its own version of Word embedded in an OL dll file.

OL 2007 is undoubtedly the best version of it yet, though I was very satisfied with OL 2003. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about Word 2007: it has a huge learning curve and I am still far from convinced that it really is as productive as Word 2003. (I blame Office 2007 for the global economic slow daown!)

Unless you are a Word power user, I'd say you would be extremely happy with 2003. If you are an Outlook power user, then go for 2007. Don't forget that there are built in tools for repairing and 'optimizing' OL pst and ost files (scanost.exe and scanpst.exe) which will be found in the Office 2003 or Office 2007 folders. (I am not sure about earlier versions.)

tf1,

Thanks a lot. I am going to go with Outlook 2003, unless Outlook 2007 comes with the new computer.

Great information I never really knew about. I'm going to try and look at that asap at my house! [smile]

You're going with 2003, then, b/c it does NOT come with the new computer? Surely there's a typo in there or maybe I need some coffeeee? [morning]

I think the inference was that a new computer may be the order of the day and possibly it may be bundled with an OEM version of Office 2007: not that Outlook 2007 is part of a new computer!
