I've run into a problem on one of my clients laptops. This was workgin just fine at one time and now I cannot connect to the mail server at all. It started as an error message "You receive a message "Outlook failed to start correctly last time". I tried everything to resolve this problem, safe mode, re-install, repair nothing works. last night I tried to rebuild the local machine profile and now when I try to setup the mail properties it just hangs after entering in the server name and mailbox name. I tried this multiple times too. I have run out of ideas at this point other than calling MS or formating the whole thing and starting fresh!

Can anyone give me some more ideas?

sounds like the Outlook client has a problem resolving the server name/mailbox name.

check that the computers DNS settings are correct.

go to DC and verify DNS server setup is correct with a DCDIAG and a NETDIAG, also you could rebuild the AD entries in DNS by doing a NETDIAG /FIX (i think it is)

check from client that you canresolve "who-is-my-dc" dont remember the command, but a good check.

hope it helps.

I seems that the servername and and mailbox resolve fine. When I click "CHECK NAME" it resolves with an underline but when I click NEXT I think it is or FINISH maybe, it just hangs there for hours if I let it.

I had a similar problem when I was making some major enhancements to an individuals profile and to correct it I just restored to something like the prior week (windows xp of course). I never did figure out what happened but it works fine now.

I thought it was profile related as well. I tried creating a new user profile and when I went into the mail settings in the control panel to insert the mailserver and mailbox, I got the same thing. LOCKUP!

Server is SBS 2003 w/excahnge 2003. Only using TCP/IP and no WINS Server running.

Laptop is XP sp2 only running TCP/IP as far as a I know. All other machines are working correctly and this one was working at one time. Not sure when that changed though.

It still sounds like profile and or Outlook related. You said you re-installed/repaired but did you restore your windows to an earlier date than when this occured? There may be some registry problems related to Outlook that are overlooked by a re-install/repair.

I have tried system restore and those did not help as well. I may not have gone back far enough though because I do not recall when this all started for him.

If you ping the Exchange Server name do you get a FQDN response?

I am having the same problem. Running SBS 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. Was setting up user and it kept hanging when trying to finalize outlook 2003. Did some repairs etc. and it finally will allow me to open Outlook. But has soon has I minimize it it will not open again. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
