Outlook, New meesages appear as read

2 possible causes of this could be the Preview Pane marking messages as read after say 1 second, or possibly you have a rule setup?
To check the 1st of these go to tools/options/other/preview pane and make sure 'mark messages as read in preview window' is unchecked. To check for Rules go to tools/rules wizard and take a look for any culprits there. You can temporarily disable all rules to see if any of them are affecting you.
