Outlook Express keeps overwriting the inbox.dbx file in my user profile intermittantly. I've had this problem before and repaired it but can't quite remember how.

OE6.0 will create a new inbox.dbx file on start up wiping out any mail that was in my inbox and leave a fresh "Welcome to Outlook" message in place of the dozen or so emails it wipes out. grrrrr....

Is there something about a folder.dbx file size limit I seem to remember causing a problem ? I've tried deleting inbox.dbx and letting OE create a new one but that doesn't work.

Anyone ? Thanks in advance.

A question - with a possible fix...do you happen to use McAfee VirusScan? MS Knowledge Base Article # 321505 addresses a problem similar to yours.

Ahh thats what it is ... thank you I didn't put the two events together. The DAT file for the McAffee VirusScan 4.1.60 engine updated in the background to 4204 on the 29th - thats when the trouble started.

What are the chances I can get the company to upgrade to the 6.01.2000 virus engine (McAffee resolved the issue) for 600+ corporate users when OE6.0 is not a "official corporate" mail program ? ... sigh I guess i'm resolved to copying new emails immediately to a new folder for the time being.

Thanks again MSeng, I can stop banging my head on my desk :)

Hi. Just had the same problem and went to Q321505 as suggested. This points to a recovery program and a patch at the mcafee site. Downloaded the prog but it only 'recovered' the email that had arrived since the overwriting. They do have a support chat facility and I'm still waiting for a technician to get back to me.I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi! Me again! The technical support say the folders have gone for good. I'll try the patch but obviously I will only be able to let you know if it doesn't work some random time in the future. It might be worth a look if you can't get anyone to upgrade mcafee for you.

Thanks for the tip MSeng

Last one!

Went to find the patch, but my version is far too old! But if you have version 6 there is a download that will fix this problem.

The same thing happened to one of my user a couple of months ago and I didn't find a solution at the time (of course, she wasn't happy). Anyway... I am so happy to come across this thread so if it happen again in the future. Anyway... I went to the McA website... but my VS is too old, no patch... And I have a question about the DBXtract... does it work???

Thanks!

Hi rytl

As far as I can tell dbxtract does not work. I don't know if I left it too late as new mail had arrived in my mail box by the time I got to use it. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has manged to get it working.

Having been caught by this twice I'm trying to get into the habit of regularly exporting my mail boxes to Outlook and turning on the auto-archive. guess I really should have done this all along. If Mcafee didn't get me something else would eventually.

Now I am just going to backup all mail by running a little batch file every day.
