I have windows 2000 and am using Outlook express 6. When I send emails with an attachment. It reports an error and stays in my outbox, but the email will go to the address 20 to 30 times. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall outlook but it did not work. I have checked for virus and no virus is detected. I am using Norton Virus scan. Thanks for your help in advance.

That is the problem is does not give an error message. The yellow exclamation show up and it appears if the message can not be sent. The message stays in the outbox but it is constantly being sent out.

I'm having the same problem though it occurs with all mails with/without attachments. No error message is given. The mail remains in the outbox even though it has been sent and every time I press send/recieve the mail is resent. Has anyone identified a solution?

This could be a corrupt outbox (or possibly sent items, but start with the outbox).

With OE closed, delete the file outbox.dbx. Then restart OE & test.

Hello gtgren- I am having the same exact problem. I read the thread and don't want to delete the outbox file until (I am sure it won;t leave me dead in the water. Have you resolved this issue?? If so, HOW?!?!?!

Thanking you in advance.

Have this identical problem though with Windows XP. Finally found outbox.dbx burried deep, renamed it to xxx_outbox.dbx, and restarted oe. Still have problem. I'm not sure but I believe this problem started when I loaded IE 7.0, decided I didn't care for it, and reloaded widows at an earlier start point (to go back to IE 6.0).

Question: My ISP is sbcglobal.net. My mail server is at att.net. Those who have been having this problem, do you have same ISP or mail server. We don't want to devote our lives to looking on our computer if problem lies somewhere else.

Usually when the email is still in outbox it sends it again and again. If the email is addressed to multiple recipients then usually it stays there because one of the addresses is either wrong or being rejected.

If using outlook express look down at the bar just above the time of day where it says connecting double click on it it will open the send receive dialog box. On the lower right of that box click on the little thumb tack to make the message stay on the screen.

This should enable you to see what the error is and correct it.
If it is an invalid email address causing the issue it will tell you what the invalid email address is.

Thank you, but unfortunately, there are no error messages under the "error" tab.

I have been able empirically to determine that processing is normal if attachment is less than 500KB and processing error occurs if over 500KB. This suggests there may be a setting somewhere to fix this???

This can suggest either an anti-virus program scanning outgoing email slowing the sending until it times out or an upload speed issue.

You can usually shut off outgoing email scanning and see if that helps.

If you go to a speedtest that will test uploads, one of which can be found here (if residing in North America)

If your upload speeds are not very good that can cause the failure when sending attachments as well.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I belive I have finally resolved this issue. If you're like me and are a saver, the file "sent items.dbx" may have grown too large. Mine was over 2MB. Once I deleted this file, the problem of the OE outbox was resolved. Apparently, the file was not deleted from the OE outbox because there was not room for it in the "sent items" folder!

Now, finding the "sent items.dbx" file is not so easy. I.e., you won't find it on search because it is embedded deep and somewhat mysteriously. So, open OE and right click on the "sent items" folder. Left click properties. You will find the file location which is extremely long. Left click on it and drag your mouse back and forth to get the file name.

On my computer, the location was:

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\application data\identities\{registry reference}\microsoft\outlook express\sent items.dbx
