This has been happening with my Win 2000 system for some months. Checked all the software to see if conflict was occurring, spoke to a number of experts and most have said that Express doesn't have a way to delay it at startup. The interesting thing is that once you click on the icon you can time it and it is right on with 2 minutes. Further if you go to Task-manager processes the file msimn.exe will be listed and ready to go.

Has anyone see or corrected this kind of strange problem.

Slow OE6
Finally after reading literally hundreds of posts on the IE6
newsgroup, I found a post by a mvps.org tech who was replying
to another person s problem that sounded somewhat similar to
the problem I had. Their solution was to search for the file
named Hosts (no extension, just Hosts) and rename it to Hosts.txt
I did this, and as is so often the case with other computer
problems, while the search for the solution may take literally
hours upon hours, the implementation of the fix, took mere
seconds.

Fix Outlook Express slowdown when MSN Messenger is disabled

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID]

Find the key {FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541} and under it select the folder IniProcServer32. In the right panel of regedit double-click on the (Default) entry at the top and completely delete the value data it contains. Now do the same for the LocalServer32 folder as well.

Or ,

Simple Outlook express loading after msn messenger is removed
For those of you who have a slow-loading outlook express after msn messenger has been removed this may help. I tried the other tweaks stating this and i didn't have the registry settings that it said. So I looked at the options and found this:

1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click on tool, options
3. Click on the general tab
4. Uncheck "automatically log on to windows messenger"

Thanks jmatt for taking the time to check out the solutions you have included.

I tried you suggestion about "hosts" but even though the file was on my computer changing it didn't make any difference on opening time with Outlook still took two minutes. I even re-booted in hopes that would make a difference.

I had previously checked on the Regedit folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID]
but it doesn't exist on my computer.

I did hope you last suggestion would be the answer but when I checked it I don't ev en have the option of unchecking "automatically log on to windows messenger" because it not an option in my General Tab in Outlook Express 6

Once again thank-you for the extra effort I was hopefully something would make it better - will just have to keep searching.

Just in case it is tied in with messenger benhammer , here are other ways of fixing .

Also ,

Do you have the AVG Outlook Express plugin, enabled ?
Don't tick , Use Outlook Express 5 Plug In . Slows it down too much .
Try disabling it - my OE performance improved greatly once the plugin was removed.
Go to AVG Control Centre, Email Scanner tab to uncheck the plugin.

Just close the contacts tab below the messages folder. That should do it.

Hi benhammer!

In addition to all the other suggestions in this thread, here's one more to try:

In the main window of OE, go to File|Folder|Compact All Folders

Hope this helps!
Neil :)

JMatt I went through your suggestions (thanks for the effort) and still no change. The Microsoft references are for XP and I running Win 2000.

Well pedromoreno I tried yours just because it seems so straight forward that it might work - sadly it still takes 120 seconds for Outlook Express 6 to load.

Neilyum - I had just compacted but I did it again and timed the load time. No difference still 120 seconds - but thanks for trying.

Sure appreciate the effort but it just drives me crazy that something can't be done on this silly situation.

Repair IE6
Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft has made IE part of the core operating system. If you think IE is screwed up, and want to repair it, you must use the sfc command:

Start > Run , copy & paste Sfc /scannow & press Enter .

This will scan and restore protected system files ( which IE is ).

If this does not work, check out How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

This may seem like an obvious question, but how many messages are in your Inbox folder? Large Inboxes do slow down Outlook... ;-)

Pooky1 another good suggestion. I counted 67 posts in my in box and then moved or deleted 37 so that the new count is 40. Express took its usual 120 seconds to load.

I should say that this problem almost seems like somewhere in the OS is a delay set to 120 seconds. This Express program loads in 120 seconds no more no less.

Thanks for the idea

Tried all these solutions but none of them worked for me. Finally found this and all is now OK.

There are various ways of disabling Windows Messenger from automatically starting, but they all have some drawbacks. Until now. Namely, if you disable Messenger, OE takes forever to load if you have the Contacts pane enabled.

Go to: Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the Contacts pane enabled).

I had the same situation on a new PC: W2K+SP4 installed and absolutely the same 120 sec delay before OE startup... What I have done: reinstall completely W2K+SP2 and the problem have gone ...
