Outlook.exe error 3

Can somebody please help me with this error. Most of time when I compose a new email and do a cut and paste to my new message, Outlook shuts down and the error comes up which says "OUTLOOK.EXE HAS GENERATED ERROR AND WILL BE CLOSED BY WINDOWS". Then, you have to re-do it again. We tried deleting the Profile and created a new one, reformatted the computer, disable all the add-ins and updated all the patches from the Microsoft Website but still keep on doing it. Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

By the way, we are using Microsoft Outlook 2000 and grabbing the email from Exchange Server 2000.

hi there,

this could be a problem with your PST file, locate the file "ScanPST.EXE" and scan the file, this ___could___ be a problem, if you cant get it ask me.

one more thing, are you connected to a domain? with exchange 5.5? or are you using internet email? (POP3?)

also, if you are using a windows with an event viewer, check out the application log for outlook.exe, our find the dr watson file that contains the errors - usually found on the C:\ drive... or do a search for "error.log"

The problem is happening to about a dozen of our 50 workstations (Win2k) connected to a domain(WinNT) with Outlook 2000/Exchange 2000(Win2k)

All workstations have the SCANPST.EXE files however the only 2 services installed are ...
1. Microsoft Exchange Server and
2. Outlook Address Book

Looks like the common event ID is 4097 ... and the problem usually (90%) happens on a cut and paste. Even a complete workstation reformat will not fix the problem???

ah I see,

OK, backup a users mailbox to a PST or something of similar fashion.

Delete the probelmatic users mailbox and re-add them (on the Exchange 2000 server).

Return to the workstation and delete all profiles on their desktop, re-add and see how you go.

Tried all of the above ...

It worked OK for a few hours and then the problem (Outlook crashes on a cut and paste) came back again.

I'm having the same problem, but I connect to multiple servers for multiple e-mail accounts. Re-installed Outlook from scratch. Nothing seems to help. Outlook Express doesn't cause a problem. Ideas?

IS the mail editor being used the HTML editor? I have seen this error occurring when the HTML editor is the default. It does not seem to happen with the plain text or RTF editor.

Have not quite figured out what is causing it but can easily reproduce the error.

Got to figure there is a problem with a DLL file that was recently updated when I took the SP1 update for IE6.

Will post more if I can narrow down the issue.

Plain text here, same problem, Outlook.exe has generated errors. Won't stay open more than a few seconds. Just started about two weeks ago. Seems to happen whenever I start to send and recieve e-mail. Ideas?

Glen,

OK your issue is different than what was contained in the orignal post. The original post was about a copy and paste function in Outlook and yours is about sending and receiving. So what I mentioned previously does not apply to your issue.


For your issue have tried opening Outlook with the /safe switch to see if it behaves?

One user in our office has a similar problem that may be related.

In short, his Outlook only crashes when he is in the middle of writing a new email. No copy and paste, just typing text. Uninstall/reinstall made no difference and nor did the Technet fixes.

My last guest for Glen's issue then would be a problem with the personal folder.

Have you tried testing it by creating a new PST file with a new profile?

The General error with "OUTLOOK.EXE HAS GENERATED ERROR AND WILL BE CLOSED BY WINDOWS" is definately a PST problem. I battled this for weeks with just one of my users. I tried everything to remedy the problem. All in all I had to create a new PST file....although you do not want to import all your stuff from your old PST to your new one because in doing so I found you bring the problems along with it. (First disable the all the add-ins in the options ie net folders, exchange ...yadda yadda yadda) Instead you want to seclect all your items and drag them into a folder on your desktop or on your computer somewhere to temporarily store them. Create your new PST file then drag your items from your windoze explorer back into the appropriate place in outlook, and that should stop the errors from occuring.

Same sort of problem here. When I try to run “Microsoft Outlook” I get the following message. “OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created” (What's the point of this error log?)
I can run the program with the “/safe” switch.
I did all the things that were suggested by the Microsoft FAQ #297010
I cleared the Add-ins, I changed the names of the .pst files to disable all the old ones, I ran the program with the “/cleanpst” switch.
I re-installed the whole Word Pro suite......Nothing helps. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks xmsre, but I'm afraid I don't understand your instruction. What is the "realtime av scan on your desktops" and how do I exclude .pst from it?(there is only the one desktop).

If you run desktop antivirus programs like norton, mcafee, etc, and the realtime av scanner detectect a virus in your pst, you'll corrupt the pst when the av program attempts a repair. It's relatively safe to exclude the pst from av scanning because when you open an attachment, it is copied to a temp directory. the AV scanner will catch it there.

Ssince none of the suggestions in this forum on "Outlook has generated errors" has helped, can I go out and buy the new Outlook 2003 and install? Will there be conflicts with the Outlook 2000? It will not open at all, but I can log in as my wife and this same Outlook 2000 works like a champ. I can't delete the identity. i've created another without importing anything and it still does not work.

Help me, I'm dying!
