I am a little confused by this procedure which I am doing for a chum.
The old pc is Outlook 2000, the new is whatever the latest version is.
Can I just copy the whole pst file over or do I have to export it in bits and if so how exactly.
I have been trying to find out how to do this for the last hour or so and just found a load of conflicting stuff.
I have a copy of Outlook 2002 here which I don't use and copying the file seems to end up with the emails intact, but no contacts.
Any help appreciated.

I would love some help with this, I'm sure its very simple once you know. I am not in that position!

appears to have the answers - I just googled
address book file locations outlook
and the above link was first on the list. Plenty more if that doesn't quite do it for you.

Does the backup/restore work to a later version?
Are the contacts in the pst file? Does importing the pst file also import the contacts?
Does the backup do anything apart from copy the pst file? I.e. can I use the pst file from the old pc as a backup to import into the new one?

I am no expert, I have not performed the task you describe though have had not entirely disimilar questions (currently I am trying to find time to research transfering info from OE to Thunderbird so if you stumble across anything on that topic I would be most grateful).
There is an Email Issues forum on this site - possibly searching / posting there will give you your answers - though there is lots on Google also.

PST files only contain emails - as the link I gave you indicated. I seem to recall that there are posts about the PST files being readable but needing to be imported or converted in order to release new functionality.

I believe that contacts are within the address book.

Hope this helps,

Gavin

When you create a pst file, at the point where it asks you which file you want to backup, you need to check the personal folder icon at the top. Then you need to check the box labled "include subfolders" This will allow you to import EVERYTHING into your new office outlook. Microsoft doesnt make the best backup tool but it works.
