When I send an e-mail with an attachment (f.e. .doc, .xls,...), nobody in our company can open the attachment. They get the following message :
"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file for permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document."

Even if they save the document, they can't open it.

Does anyone know a solution for this problem?

Thanxs, WizzBE

Thanxs for your advice but I have already tried that. And I still have the problem.
The problem does not only occurs with Outlook 2000 but also with Outlook 97.
In the beginning I thought it had to do something with different versions of outlook but when I tested the problem with same versions, I still got the problem.

Somebody another suggestion?

Are the attachments saved with long filenames?

I'm asking because I currrently have a user in our company whose experiencing a similar problem. If the attachment is sent to him with an old style 8.3 filename, he can open it just fine. If the attachment has a long filename, he gets errors.

Also, have you had them try saving the attachment somewhere and open it from there? In my case, saving the file to My Documents still caused an error opening a long filename, which leads me to believe it is not an Outlook issue.

I have tried your solution but they still can't open the attachment. They have saved the document locally and even then they can't open it.

But when I save for example a word document into rich text format, they can open it!?!?!?

What now? Any suggestion is welcome.

Which e-mail editor are you using? It sounds like you are sending a link to where the file is rather than an attachment.

Do you have the same issue if you switch editors (Plain, Text, RTF,...)? joegz

What version of Office are you using. If you are using Office 2000 you will have to install the text conversion from the CD. Just start the install and choose add/remove components. Choose text converters and filters then install.

We use Outlook 97 or Outlook 2000 as e-maileditor. We always install the full version of Office 97/2000, so also the text converters and filters components.

I do not think that it's a link that's sent instead of a document. Because when I save the attachment locally, the size is too big for a link.

From some peoples it's possible to open their attachments.
I have already compared their pc and their outlook settings and no differences were found.

Office 2000 does not automatically install text converters even with a full install.

Outlook 97 and Outlook 2000 gives you the option of using different e-mail editors such as Plain Text, RTF, HTML and Word. Which of these editors are you using and have you tried switching to a different editor to see if it makes a difference. You will find this under TOOLS - OPTIONS - MAIL FORMAT.

I find that most persons having a problem similar to yours is because Word as the e-mail editor is selected. joegz
