Outlook Attachments (word, excel) d/n open. Cause machine to freeze.

I have a user working on a Windows XP Professional machine with Office 2003 with all current updates running. Everytime receives an e-mail with a Word or Excel attachment, if I go to open it it will cause Outlook to stop responding and completely freeze up the machine. That happens when I try to open it directly though Outlook. If I save a copy of the file to his hard-drive, I experience the same problem. If I have him forward me the e-mail, I can open the attachment without a problem, so it's obviously an isolated situation. Any ideas?

obviously don't know if you have sorted waverly but does the problem occur if the user logs onto another machine ?

Logging onto that user on a seperate machine, the problem does not occur.

I tried one fix that I have found, however to no avail.

These two statements seem to lean towards a file-type association problem with the one machine or something really wrong with this user's profile.

Is this person able to open *.doc and *.xls files directly thru Windows Explorer? those created on this machine and those created elsewhere? What happens if someone else logs onto the same machine and tries to open the email/files?
Have you performed maintenance activities on this machine such as Detect and Repair of Office 2003, deleting temp files, deleting the Word data key in the Registry? I would also clean up the mailbox by emptying the Deleted Items folder and turning off the Journal. Try performing the activities with no other applications open except for Outlook. Check memory settings and usage.
