I am running Win 2K Pro and Office XP. Questions concerning Outlook and Outlook Express.
1. Are both these programs part of Win 2K or XP???
2. Aren't both of these programs made by Microsoft?? They both "designate" their data files to go to the Microsoft "Application Data" directories.
3. Why does Outlook backup (contact)files automatically as .pst and Outlook Express as .wab AND those two formats are NOT interchangeagle (one cannot read the other, I'VE TRIED!)Have to backup as Text .csv (comma separated values - windows) in order to import contact list from one to another.
4. Why does ATT Broadband refuse to support Outlook? (Only Outlook Express)?
5. It seems that on another computer (running Win 98) I used to be able to update one contact list and the other program (Outlook Express) would automatically be updated. Can't get that to happen w/ Win 2K and Office XP!
6. Why does everyone seem to be having so many problems transferring info (e-mail, contact) from one to the other?

If you can answer any of these questions, you may be the next contestant on "Has Bill Gates become such a confused, schizo eccentric that he is now unleashing his own brand of personal Civil War on millions of unsuspected?"
What's the Purse? You get to Fire Bill Gates! and then get to figure out how take something so simple and UNSCREW IT UP! Hurry, Please!

...the truth is out there

outlook is a part of the MS office.
Outl Express is a part of MS IE
3. by design. always try to use Outlook rathe Outl express - Outl express for internet mail + mails only configurations.what is it ATT Broadband?
6. by design it 's different products. for diffrent purposes. The same question could be why it's not possible to migrate data fro Novell GroupWise to MS Outlook? Different products. (too extreme example)

Thanks for clearing up SOME of the confusion Victor!

3. I like Outlook better too. My contact list is alot more manageable. However, I am trying to fax a resume to about 20 prospects and the Fax Wizard (part of W2k or XP???) is defaulting to the OE database (which I have since figured out that I can imprt/exp betw the two using .csv files (ofcourse that couldn't be an easy task!)). Then after that I couldn't get the Fax Wizard to work, Fax wizard that is default in Word Print feature. Got a dial tone, dialed busy for each number (see my other thread under Outlook Exporting for better description of Faxing nightmare). Is there a Fax Wizard Launcher/Manager anywhere, or can we only access it through a Word "Print" command?
Sorry! ATT Broadband is the California cable company (high spd cable connect).
6. I hear ya but MS can't keep it all in one TIGHT bag? I mean how many headaches are they needlessly creating on a per minute basis?

Thanks

Frank

HI again! :)

Fax Wizard is a part of Office 2k/XP.
>>Is there a Fax Wizard Launcher/Manager anywhere - hard question :) try to use ContrPanel - Phone&Modem Options - related to fax also.
well , MS , in comparison with Novell - for example, makig money, despite on all things, and making it good. Software is almost always a problematic thing... :) isn't it?

Hello Again V!
I'll check that out on the faxing stuff! Thanks.

I keep hoping that Apple will open up their platform to Third party software developers to finally give Microsoft some REAL competition. If Microsoft spent half the time developing decent software as it does trying to figure out how it's going to CONTINUE TO RULE THE WORLD, then I honestly believe software wouldn't be such a problematic thing. EVENTUALLY, the world is going to wake up, and fire Bill Gates. I mean in '95, Gates came out and said "We're not going to get into the internet! We're going to focus on PC's". A half a year later, he's trying to force browser exclusivity on every computer manufacturer in the WORLD. Meanwhile, every successive next-generation MS operating system (about 5 now) is written in six different programming languages, maybe works, and to top it all off, Gates doesn't want to EASILY REVEAL the source code of those operating systems to software developers. SO, all your non-MS programs have to be RE-WRITTEN (a hundred times)in order to work with the latest Operating System for which Bill reluctantly, and slowly releases the source code. The end result is that the entire industry (you and me...the END-USERS)suffers mercilessly with software bugs and ridiculous problems because of the NEW OPERATING SYSTEMS. You know, Refrigerators are pretty complicated pieces of machinery too...BUT THEY WORK, most of the time, seemlessly! I think, and tell me if I'm wrong, that as end-users we have been programmed to believe that "Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't" is GOOD ENOUGH! Until we start demanding a product that works, without spending hours and hours of our own time---getting it to work, then we will always get exactly the kind of compatibility-stupidity we currently see w/ Outlook and Outlook Express. Except w/ Outlook and OE, Bill has risen to even greater heights of absurdity...MICROSOFT is the author of BOTH PROGRAMS. Both programs primarily do THE SAME THING! But in order to switch between one program or the other, you have to dedicate your life to computer science (I'm exagg., but not that far off). Why doesn't the faxing software support Outlook...I mean let's get real. I guess Bill is SO into his court cases, that this BLATANT compatibility issue didn't even cross his mind? I think he's completely lost any FUTURE VISION he once had, and now figures that anything he can do to slow down or thwart the efforts of the END-USERS will somehow benefit him because, afterall, is any of this really his fault? Any comments appreciated, really!

Hello,

Yes, partialy I agree with you. But also possible you can agree with me , that MOSTLY there is NO alternative workstation platform for a big business that MS platform.(w2kP/XP).
Macintosh - has a little diffrent targed auditory.
Linux - too complex system for supporting + lack of application support.
so..., Novell has NO desktop OS...
hope , that MS "trustophy computing" will change MS buggable history. :)

Hi Victor K!
Oh I absolutely agree with you that we have no other meaningful alternatives! I really hope Apple wakes up some day and opens it platform to programmers or to somehow be able run Win based programs. As far as Windows becoming unbuggable...when Bill figures out that the World doesn't have to kiss his #@!!, THEN programs will be debugged BEFORE we pay for them.

Thanks for your response

Frank

Outlook is part of Office not 2K. and is not compatible with outlook express. Outlook is a PIM, Outlook Express is just an E-mail client. ATTBI does support Outlook, I use it as my E-Mail client. They have posted all the settings for Outlook and Express on their home page.
