Outlook and Exchange server logon problems...

We have a few laptops in our office which have repeated problems logging on to the Exchange server. We are running SBS 2000 with Exchange 2000. Most PC's are running 2000 OS with Outlook XP 2002, but I have one that is running XP Pro OS that is having the same problem.

If the user starts Outlook as soon as they logon to Windows then it connects to Exchange fine. But if they exit Outlook then try to restart Outlook at a later time during the same session, they are prompted with an "Enter Password" box. The box asks for user name, password, and domain name. There is an OK button, a Cancel button, and a Change Password button. Interesting thing about the Domain Name field is that the input box is limited to 15 characters.

Even after entering the correct username and password, it will not logon to Exchange. I have tried a variety of options in the Domain field but to no avail. Upon an unsuccessful login attempt you receive the following Outlook error message:
"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed."

After receiving the login prompt, the only way to successfully reconnect to Exchange is to restart the computer and re-logon then start Outlook immediately. There are no Exchange related entries on the server event logs after this happens. It happens with some users but not others. I have tried a few potential solutions after researching, but to no avail. Unless I am totally missing something, this is a very annoying problem that I would like to resolve soon.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

Thoughts or suggestions anyone?

Recheck the outlook profile properties and compare with a workstation that is not having the problem to see if you find anything different. Just a couple more thoughts to try:

(1) Remove profile/Readd profile
(2) Remove/Add TCP/IP Protocol if Step1 does not work then reconect to Exchange.

Hey blt975 ,

Did you ever fix this problem of Outlook password prompting?

Believe it or not, Windows Updates have seemingly remedied the problem for the most part. Not really sure why but seems to have helped. Also making sure the server is all caught up on Windows Updates. Although, we do have one XP laptop that still has the problem on occasion. Haven't really addressed the issue in a while though - I guess that's a good thing.
