Outlook 2K (Win2K) folder list problem

Here’s an Outlook 2K (under Win2K Professional) folder list problem.

Over time a number of .PST files have been opened (File · Open · Personal Folders Files). But, now they won’t close (right click · Close "folder name&quot and a very uninformative error pops up: "The operation failed. An object could not be found."

Well. Yes, the operation did fail. But, I can see the folder structure and items; and I can see .PST file in Explorer. So, which object could not be found?

Some of the things I’ve done to an offending .PST file...
· emptied it of all items: no luck
· renamed it: no luck
· re-opened it: no luck
· scanned it with SCANPST.EXE: no luck
· deleted (or moved) it: the error still pops up, but the folders cannot be accessed

I cannot access the advanced properties features to compress it: same error.

Some of the things I’ve done to Outlook...
· repaired it
· uninstalled it and ran a registry clean up utility
· reinstalled it
Still no luck. And, yet after re-installation I can see all the old folder entries.

Am I missing a vital .DLL or other component that just won’t reinstal; or has been changed or corrupted?

Will a service pack help?

Do I need to tweak some bizzar little registry entry?

Rebuild the Outlook profile and they should go away. Outlook is picking it up from the registry and the easiest way to resolve is to rebuild the profile. joegz

Being thrown into the deep end with all this admin stuff, I've recently discovered how to delete & copy user profiles under Win2K.

So, how do I rebuild the Outlook profile?

The machine I'm working with is a standalone notebook that hooks up with a dial up connection. It doesn't have a roaming profile, only a local.

Any advice you can provide will be appreciated.

With Outlook closed.

1. Open the Control Panel

2. Open the MAIL applet

3. The current Outlook profile should display the installed components. Write down the settings for each of the installed components so you can add them back in quickly.

4. Click on SHOW PROFILES

5. Select the clients profile (if there is more than one listed just verify which is the clients correct profile just to make sure you recorded the correct information.

6. With the correct profile highlighted click on REMOVE

7. Click on ADD and then start rebuilding the profile and adding the components back in.

I might be missing something here.

I got off the blocks, but didn't break into a sweat before calling time out. Here's what happened...
[ol][li]closed Outlook,
[li]opened the Control Panel,
[li]opened the Mail applet,
[li]the "Internet Accounts" window popped opened listing all the mail accounts.[/ol]
I couldn't locate the Outlook profile.

I checked the help file which didn't enlighten me.

While poking around I found that the Internet only option for mail delivery has been selected.

Hmm...

Because this is Outlook for IMO the steps I previously gave would not apply. Please check out the following article on how you can remove this pst manually from the registry.
