Error Message:
The Office Assistant requires Microsoft Agent 2.0 or later. This product is available in the Office System Pack.

Translation:
This error message can appear either when you try to activate Office Assistant within a program or simply start any Office XP program. It means your Agentsvr.exe file is either corrupted or missing.

Solution:
There are three possible solutions to this problem. The first is to download Agent Core Components from the Web at activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/agent2/msagent.exe. Once you have the Msagent.exe file on your system, double-click it to install.

Another solution, which applies only to Win98 and WinNT4 users, is to insert the Office XP CD into your CD-ROM drive. Click Start, then Run, and type x\setup /spforce (substituting the letter of your CD-ROM drive for X) in the Open field and click OK or press ENTER. In the command, the “/spforce” flag forces the reinstallation of System Files Update. (Be sure you leave a space between setup and the forward slash (/) mark. This identifies SPFORCE as a flag for the setup program.) Choose Repair System Files Update and then Detect And Repair Errors in the System Files Update installation.

The final method of replacing Agentsvr.exe is to extract it from your original Office XP CD. To do this, put the Office CD in your CD-ROM drive, holding down the SHIFT key to prevent Autorun from loading the CD. Use Windows Explorer to browse to FILES\OSP\1033 and double-click the Osp1.cab file within. It’s an archive, and you’ll find Agentsvr.exe inside it. Double-click this file, and when prompted, browse to your C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT folder. This will tell Windows the location to place the new copy of Agentsvr.exe; click Save.
