My customer's Outlook constantly indicates it is sending messages (started off a month ago saying 1 message but now says 106) but there are no messages in the outbox. Messages they do really send do arrive at the destination. There doesn't appear to be excessive internet activity so I don't think it is spam being relayed.
How do I find out what these messages are and kill them off?

Is there a number beside the outbox? For example:

Mailbox - Joe Blow
Calendar
Contacts
Deleted Items
Inbox [5]
Journal
Outbox [109]
Sent items
Tasks

Is this Outlook connected to an Exchange server or just used for POP/IMAP mail?

No, there aren't any numbers displayed next to the Outbox and there is nothing inside the Outbox.

They are just using POP.

Very bewildering

i have a very similar problem,

I use exchange server but still recieve personnal emails from a pop account which i cannot send on.

An email sent to my pop account asked for a read reply which i accepted but it tried to send this via the pop account which failed, now even though i have no number indicated beside the outbox it is trying to send this reply message but fails...

any thoughts how to stop this, it is just annoying that it always shows sending message 1 of 1 then fails..

pantheontek; I'd maybe try the inbox repair tool. There could be a corruption in your pst file.

mdevo; sounds like your problem is different. when outlook is setup in a corporate environment i don't think it can send from your POP account. Can you post what the error you get is when your 'send from POP' fails?

ste52653,

Task 'tiscali - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

as I mentioned no number is showing beside outbox!!

anyone any ideas how to delete this request of sending although no messages in outbox???????????

I too am having the same problem, Outlook 2003 is trying to send emails that are not there. I have checked for Trojan, Worms and all the other usual culprets but there is nothing there. According to MS Tech support said its a common problem but I am not sure that is correct. I have tried to do the detect and repair, this caused the SMTP to stop working. and now I am at a loss. if anyone,, has ANY idea of what to do,, please tell us. as I see it, the number of emails it is trying to send goes up by 1 per day.

I had this problem with my dad's PC which was trying to send mail on a pop3 account after he cancelled an email realising the attachment was 10meg!! . I managed to fix by running a full detect and repair. ie (ticking both of the boxes).

WARNING:

This will reset Outlook as though it was first installed, so before doing you need to create or make note of any pst files, contacts, address book, you need the mail settings, pop3, username and passwords, smtp and pop details.

Then I just re-configured, moved mail into a new pst file, sorted out contacts setup again and all is now working fine.

Its drastic but as a last resort should work !!

Good Luck!

You could also try running scanpst, to fix any errors and also compact pst if in use. As I found there were many errors in the pst file but they couldn't be repaired!

This is telling you one of 2 things (to start with). 1: Your employer is blocking port 25 in their firewall except for their own stuff, or 2: Your ISP is blocking traffic on port 25 from computers that are not attached to its own network (this is quite common now).

I suspect that if your employer were to let you out on port 25 or your ISP stops blocking it for your account (you can usually request this) then you will probably get an error message that says something like "550:Relay Access Denied", which is basically your POP3 server protecting itself from abuse.

I use my POP3 account from work all the time, but my organization is not blocking the port, and I run my own mailserver so I am able to give my work computer permission to send out mail using my server. If you nave your own mail server there are ways around almost everything....

I had the same problems...installed the service pack 3 for office 2003 and it solved my issues. give it a try

I had the same issue and installed service pack 3 and it resolved the issue. Thanks baysailornva!

You guys saved me hours of time. I installed SP3 and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much!.

Stevebor,
Great tip on the stuck message receipt. I had to use the tool and delete the message and that worked perfectly.
