I have a problem openning Outlook 2003 sometimes. When I click on the icon, Outlook opens for a split second and then closes. I have to click on the icon a couple of times before it opens up and stays open.

Any clues?

In case this will help, see the following excerpt from Woody's Office Watch:
Code:
RB also writes, "I noticed Outlook hangs when I have an IPAQ on the
cradle. As soon as I remove it from the cradle Outlook quits. I use
ActiveSync 3.7.1"

I think - think! - that will solve most readers' problems with Outlook
2003 hanging. If it doesn't solve yours, write! Talk2woody at

By the way, I've also heard rumblings that Outlook 2003 with Exchange
Server 2003 and Norton Anti-Virus are having problems co-habiting.
There are also problems with NAV bumping up against Outlook COM add-
ins. In both cases, the only apparent solution is to disable NAV
scanning of incoming Outlook 2003 messages. ...

I have exactly the same issue... although I think I can give further details that may help to narrow down this problem.

I have two profiles set up. One for work and one for personal mail. My work profile connects directly to an exchange 2000 server. Outlook never exhibits this problem when connecting using this profile. My personal profile is a fairly typical POP / SMTP mail server set up - and it nearly always exhibits this behaviour.

My personal profile is the default profile and I force outlook to use my work profile by using the /profile command line switch.

I have found that closing Windows Messenger can make a difference - but not all the time.

Do you too have a multiple profile set up? Are you using the /profile switch at all? Dou you use Windows Messenger (or MSN messenger)?

My O/S is Windows XP SP1. Patched with all critical security patches.

Running outlook with the /cleanviews option seems to have cured this for me.
