A contractor I paid to setup an Exchange server/DC at our branch office in the USA has installed Outlook 2003 on the server(?!?)

Thankfully this idiot contractor also forgot to send us a bill for the work, but unfortunately now I have to get Outlook 2003 off the server. I am worried to just simply do an uninstall as it may remove components relied on by Exchange server.

I do not want to do a clean install on the whole server as this is not practical, so is anyone able to offer any suggestions on the practicalities of removing Outlook 2003 from an Exchange 2000 server/Domain Controller.

Thanks.

Why are you worried about having Outlook 2003 on the server?

A) Licensing

B) I am told it is not a supported Microsoft configuration by my external tech. support company. They advised me to get rid of it, but said that they wouldn't be able to

C) You spend all this time trying to create perfect baseline standards for all your servers, and then one gets messed around with.

d) Exchange Best Practises Analyser tool throws it up as an issue with the server

I'd be happy if someone could assure me it will not affect the operation of exchange (and any future updates). However I'd be even happier if someone had experienced removing it without any problems and could share this info.

Take a deep breath :) Goto add/remove programs and remove Outlook 2003. That's all. It won't screw anything up on your server. It's just a client app. Btw, there's absolutly nothing wrong with having it installed on your server.

Licensing is an issue if it was installed without a license, so that should be checked. If you don't have a license, then yes, uninstall it. However, if you have Exchange licenses, that includes a license for Outlook, so check to see which licenses you have for Exchange to see if it covers Outlook 2003.

Also be aware that some older backup programs required Outlook to be on the server in order to back it up.

Finally, if you don't need it and don't want it, then simply remove it as forbsy said.

Hi!
MS Outlook uses a DLL which is used by Exchange 2000.
Actuaally the installationof MS Outlook replaces the DLL provided by the Exchange 2000 installation. Sometimes this causes problems for Exchange 2000. If Exchange is running smooth then there is no reason to worry about it. If you are concerned aboit licensing you can uninstall MS Outlook and when prompted about whether you want to remove a DLL used by other Applications - choose no.
If by any chance you experience problems, because this DLL is removed you can reinstall Exchange 2000 (that is a simple procedure and you do not risk anything - it just restores the original installation files, and do not forget to apply SP3 ans reboot).

Hi netometer. Do you know what .dll is replaced with the installation of Exchange 2000? It seems odd that Exchange would become unstable when Outlook is installed. I've installed Outlook on several of my Exchange boxes and never had any problems.
