Outlook 2003 default accounts

Dear all,

I recently set up 2003 SB Server at the office. The workstations use Outlook 2003 to connect to our external POP3 server to collect email (ie not via Exchange). When I set this POP3 account as default in Outlook 2003, the mail works fine. However after a couple of days, Outlook reverts the default account back to Exchange all by itself(!) which prevents the email at the office from working.

Does anyone know a way to stop Outlook reverting back to Exchange as the default account. I've tried looking everywhere for a solution but to no avail.

Cheers!

Nothing happens 'all by itself', so there must be some other thing going on.
You better double-check everything again.
Also, Outlook does not 'revert' to any other profile just like that. Again, check the profile settings in control panel, and see the users cannot change that.

Thanks for that Marc!

This is a reported problem which I have found other people having problems with online, but no solution. Under Win9x, ME and 2K Outlook 2003 does not revert back.

It appears that Windows XP does however (and only XP). When I mentioned 'all by itself', I meant with no user intervention (ie system driven). I know that users aren't changing it for two reasons:

1) Most users find it difficult enough finding the Start button, let alone playing with account defaults.

2) It happens on all machines.... mine included! I can assure you I am not changing these settings!

I take it you have no ideas to a solution...

You take it correct ;-)

There really is no direct link I can make between Xp and this issue, never heard of that one, and it is surely no XP interfering here.
Something else must be, of course .. what.

Just to launch some loose ideas:
Are the XP boxes configured different in any way then the others? Like DHCP, other domain, workgroups, lease times that expire sooners, ...

And, what does one of these PC's do if you only have 1 profile on it? In which case it cannot revert to anything, so, just wondering.

Each machine is configured identically.

The machines have 1 profile with Exchange account for shared contacts/calendar etc

and a POP3 account to collect the email (not using Exchange for mail)

Other than that, these machines run Office and an inhouse database.

Thats about it!

The strange this is they revert back at different times, not all at the same time. It appears they revert at logon, but it may be on opening Outlook, i can be sure yet.

Take one machine (even a test one) and remove the Exchange profile, just to see what happens.

Sorry, but without being in front of it, we will have to play it as we go.
