We are in process of upgrading to Office XP. We are disappointed to see that "insert as shortcut" is not an option anymore in Outlook (apparnetly with Outlook 2000 SP2 they block shortcuts as "potentially unsafe" attachments anyway...). Anyway, the only viable replacement we have is "attach as hyperlink." But on many computers, it appears when they are sent a hyperlink to a file on a shared network drive, the "hyperlink" is not a hyperlink at all, just text. Does anyone know why this happens? I don't know if it is the person sending or receivig the hyperlink that is having a problem. Any advice is apprecited.

FYI, the reason we use this is because we have some users on slow connections, and we do not want to send large files through e-mail. Plus, this saves out Exchange server a little stress in the process.

If the hyperlink is not a consecutive string (i.e. there are spaces in it, or the like), you'll have to place "<" and ">" around it; are you doing that?

likewise, as a workaround you could create a shortcut on your local machine and attach it as a file - that might work.

This problem often happens if the client has "Word" as their email editor. In email, click on "message" then look to see if "Use Word as your email editor" is enabled. Just turn it off and the hyperlinks should be enabled.

Yeah, I noticed that when poking around this week. It seems if the email is compused in Word, the hyperlinks only appear as hyperlinks when read in Word. What a bunch of crap. :) Thanks for the info though.

If anyone discovers a patch or anything for this please feel free to post it here.
