I'm trying to import a pst file created by someone else. Everytime I go to File -> Import and Export -> Import from another program or file etc The process appears to work and I don't get any error messages. During the import process, I get a personal folder appear in my folder list but this disappears when I click "Finish". At the end of the process, I'm left with not result. Nothing has been added and my folders look exactly as they did before. I've tried Detect and Repair and I've reinstalled Outlook. I have imported this exact same pst file before on the same machine (XP Pro).

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Steve

I would start with rights - make sure your login has full control over the .pst file in question.

Couple of things, but how has the file pst been exported in the first place? For example the person who had the pst file before did they go to file and export as pst and then choose what folders and items to export, if so did they export the whole Mailbox from the top level and say yes to include subfolders. Or have you searched the machine for the pst and copied the pst file across instead ?

When you import the file in are you selecting yes to replace duplicates, or ignoring duplicates etc? What are you selecting at this stage. Are you also selecting to import everything as well ?

Also what version are you using as well.

One other quick thing make sure the pst is not set to read only, check the properties for the file. If the pst has come from a cd it will have read only set on it even if you copy to the hard drive etc.

Thanks for the replies. To answer questions in turn;

1 login I have admin rights
2 person who exported the pst is away. I can't reach him - I'm not sure how the export was done.
3 I've tried all the options. Same result.
4 Outlook 2002
5 It's not read only.

Thanks for all your help.

Rather than importing try simply opening it. File,Open...not got a recent copy of outlook here at home to tell you the full command path.

Thanks,

Gavin

I have had this problem in the past as well with users who left the company, and I needed info from their projects. The issue, for me, was rights/permissions. I had to find a program to open the pst that was protected. And it worked like a champ. Let me know if this is something you need, and I can email it to you.

Thanks,
Bob
