where are the mail, deleted folders at on hard drive?
i want to be able to use sure delete on my deleted items, but can't locate the file..

i tryed thunderbird earlier on and could find these folders that i imported.. so i'm thinking that outlook should have the same.
went to name, application data, microsoft, outlook .. but folders aren't there..

this isn't outlook express

thanks in advance,

billy a

BillyA,
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook[/tt]

The data file (default) is [tt]outlook.pst[/tt] or [tt]User_Name.pst[/tt]

Hope this helps,
CMP

do the deleted items stay in pst files? They may still be there in unused space at the top of a file, and lurking in any unused space on the HDD - for those who can stitch the blocks together. My understanding is that pst files are re-written when you exit Outlook, but how the file is organised and if old entries are removed or flagged "deleted" until archive needs an expert to explain. Mine are so big that binary views are impossible to understand.

tyvm

as that's what i'm running into..

suppose need to seek alternative methods..

cresbydotcom,
My understanding is yes, I believe that when something is 'deleted' from the pst it's data is marked as deleted but it's still there.

I believe that the pst repair facility from Microsoft will actually remove 'deleted' items in the pst by re-writing the file with only 'un-deleted' data.

Hope this helps,

maybe that's why my files are so big. Now any clues for names of that "delete the deleted" app/exe to look for in the MS database?

Well, I repaired my work files and they reported some errors and made slightly bigger files.

Can't see if it has removed any deleted entries yet.

If you do in fact have a PST file, the files you delete need to be handled a bit different than normal (I believe)

First right click the deleted folder (in the PST) and choose to empty the deleted filed.

Next:

File > Data File Mgmt > Personal folders > Settings > Compact

This will reduce the PST to just (non deleted) files

OH... I just noticed this is the VBA forum...If my response was incorrect, please disregard.

what i'm finding is to upgrade to outlook 2003 and then add
SafeIT E-mail Shredder. this is supposed to del all fragments of del files..

this shuld help in keeping the pst file smaller????

doesn't work on 2000 though..

i've read horror stories on 03 and really not sure.. but i've also read good stories too. most bad were running smaller machine, 500-600 mhz.. i run 2.6 gb 1024 ram, so not thinking it's gonna be a issue..

lmk yur thoughts..
