I will keep my question simple.

Is there a way to share contacts between multiple computers on the network each with Outlook 2000?

I only came up with a non-viable solution: I can have a .PST file with only contact information and store it on a file server and the clients can import this file to Outlook every now and then.

Is there a better method that eliminates the requirement of importing?

Yes, use an Exchange sever ;-)

less clean is the v-card. Each contact can be saved as a v-card (.vcf file). those files can then be brought into anyone's Outlook, and added to the contacts (drag & drop). It's not really shared, just passed around.

Changes to the contact only affect each users file (unless they save the v-card and send around, then other users will need to merge with their current contact info).

Aren't there some good Exchange clones on the market nowadays?

The easiest thing I would do if you want to share contacts is that you could create a public folder and in that folder you can create the file to be a contacts folder. That way anyone can see, add, or remove contacts from the folder in the company that needs too. Of course that does mean you have to have a exchange server
