Every once in a while, if my computer crashes or the power goes out or something and I have Outlook 2000 running at the time, when I go to re-open it, it just stays on the loading screen and eventually the error window pops up.

Often, the error window doesn't pop up and the program loads however it ceases to work once it has loaded. Then it crashes again. So the process begins again. For some strange reason, if Outlook does load and crash - it takes at least 20 minutes or so to show the splash screen, then it craps out once the main window loads up.

If anyone has any suggestions how I can repair this problem, please let me know as I have no other way to get email.

Thanks.

Jason.

I have a similiar problem, outlook 2000, I open it, and it hangs, with just the splash screen, drive activity stops - and it will stay there indefinitely, sometimes eventually taking windows down with it in the end. the problem appeared to start after a power outage while outlook was running - but repairing, reinstalling, uninstalling and then installing fails to fix it. the problem appears to have got worse and at this time I am unable to access outlook at all. however the rest of the office suite functions perfectly, and I am very puzzled, not to mention frustrated - any ideas? Can you give us an idea for your setup? In other words are you using an Exchange server or are you Internet Mail Only type of setup?

I would think that in either scenario the .pst file (personal folder) could have gotten corrupted. May need to run scanpst on the personal folder to check for errors. joegz

I can't remember the URL of the site that has instructions on how to fix this problem but I am certain that running the "scanpst" was what I did. After running it, it no longer screws up after a crash.

I am trying to recover from the same problem. The computer was accidently powered down when mail was open. I have internet pop mail and the incoming mail is first scanned by Norton Antivirus 2001 on a windows 98 operating system. Norton is also misbehaving - I can see the results of the bottom 3 radio buttons and scan but the first 2 radio buttons generate a transparent screen to the desktop. All other programs seem okay. I used the Office 2001 repair feature, this did not work. I scanned my system for bad system files, fixed a few but still no outlook. I have unloaded and reloaded the software and replaced a driver common to both - mapi32.dll in 2 different folders and remembered to remove the read only flag. Not sure what to do now other than formatting and reloading.

I got a few valuble clues from Milly Staples(MVP - Outlook) response to Outlook 2002 fails to load all the way. She says if you can start Outlook in the safe mode - Outlook/Safe using the "run" button in the start menu, the software is okay. The problem is probably a corrupt outcmd.dat file. She was right but I doubted her because when I found the file, renamed to to outcmd.old as she suggested, it still didn't work. There are several copies of this file and you must rename the file under the current profile folder. This file has your custom views and any custom toolbars you may have for Outlook. You will have to redefine them.
