Outline my effect

I used a 3d effect on a piece of outlined text. I rotated the text and now it has a nice perspective. But the original text is still the same. I want, similar as with breaking a link to a symbol, to fit the outlines to the edges of the effect.

Is there a way?

I checked, and it's Object>Expand Appearance (I have yet to figure out exactly what the parameters are that determine which Expand option Illustrator enables).
