Hello,

We're running Quark XPress 5.01 on a PC. Periodically when we go to open a file, we receive an error message "Out of Memory [-108]" and we cannot get into the file and therefore have lost all of our work unless someone out there in helpful Tekland knows how to recover it.

Can anyone (a) tell me why this is happening (since the computer operates fine most of the time, and with much bigger quark files, I have a hard time believing it's really a memory problem) and (b) if there is any way to recover the file?

Thanks!

Could be many factors...

Here are just a few things to consider -

are the files local or on a network drive?

can the same file be opened on another computer?

are the files native Quark 5 or were they created in a previous version or on another platform with unavailable xtensions?

Have you tried using Windows Safe Mode and opening the files and get the same result?

If you just start a new document and save it, can you duplicate the same error message?

What operating system are you using - 98, ME, XP?

What kind of fonts are you using?

What kinds of printer are you using?

I get this same error with a Mac running Quark 5.0.1. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is a problem with 5.0.1. I have been using quark 4 for years with no problems. Something about 5 is corrupting the file and it can't be opened with 5 or 4 after.
Quark has info on the tech support section of their web site on how to find the problem. I am looking to resolve this myself.

I am having this very same problem with Quark 5.01!
It was very strange and in the beginning I couldn't make rhyme or reason out of it. I eventually did get some clues though.
It seemed that after having my document open for any reasonable length of time ~10min or so, I would get the out of memory error.
Using this as the first level hint, I popped up the Windows Task Mgr (in Win2K).
I was then shocked at what I saw QuarkXpress doing!:
When I would first just open the application, it used a reasonable amount of memory. But when I opened up my document, I observed the amount of memory allocated to Quark continue to go up steadily, even I was doing nothing in Quark 'cept looking at my document.
I then minimized the document within Quark, and the memory usage increases stopped at whatever they were now at. Maximizing the document continued the memory leak in Quark.
I have 512MB DDR RAM, so it takes about 10 minutes before I actually run out of memory, but that is where it is going. I tried it again by opening a blank document, and the same memory leakage occurs.
I don't know what or why it is being caused; I am using an educational edition, maybe that's it? I doubt it very much. I do also have some Extensis plugins, but I still doubt thats the problem either.
I will try to figure it out, but this is unacceptable, and I will probably have to go to Pagemaker (w/its Quark importing ability) to continue my work. Quark, when its working right, is a big pain in the butt, has a somewhat arhaic feel, and is completely unintuitive in its functions and interface. I have it mastered now, but it would have been impossible w/o the manual.
Let me know if you have figured it out.

Why does my QuarkXpress (Quark Xpress) Application keep quitting on me, saying Out of Memory?
I have found that if Extensis QX-Tools 4 is installed in QuarkExpress 5, and the Document QX-Viewer is "shown", that there is a massive and ongoing memory leak, about 1MB every 5 seconds.
To solve:
First open Quark, then your document, then go to extensis and "hide" QX-Viewer. Close Quark. Then reopen it.
The memory leak should not occur now.

All the other QX-Tools seem be ok, but you might consider removing the Extensis QX-Tools plugin extensions.
