I have a windows 98 machine in my network until yesterday it ran just fine
but today when i try to logon (with a user with logon script for drive mapping) I get the an out of memory message.
I did an virus and spyware scan but the system is clean.
the bizar thing is I can run outlook , word etc without a problem. but if i tried to get to my dos prompt i get the error again.
i have already replaced the command com in the root but without succes and did a system file check but also without any succes.
even when i kill al the other proccesses running on the pc except the explorer i get this error.
anybody got an idea ?

A couple questions:

- How much free space do you have on the drive?

- What size is the swap file (Virtual Memory)?

- How much RAM do you have installed (too much can cause this error)?

- Do you have Microsoft Office/Word installed, and if so, what version?

I had that with a 95 box.

It was caused by Norton... no idea how to fix it though.

(I unstalled Norton...) )

for the hd space and the swap file i'll have to look.
but it has 192 mb ram and is running office 2000 fine i only get this error if I try to use command.com

Has something happened to command.pif in the \windows folder (like its memory settings have been changed)?

the hd space available is 600 mb of 6 gb
the virtual memmory is managed by windows itself
for the command.pif i have to check

the icoon of my command.pif and msdos.pif is change to default (unassigned icoon) maybe this rings a bell for somebody
i replaced the command.com with a command.com from a working pc but without result.

Here are a couple MS articles to look at:

Even if that last one doesn't seem like it applies to you, try the resolution anyway.

The icon is held in pifmgr.dll - does that file exist on your machine?

Might be worth running sfc (system file check).

Does command.pif have the normal properties for a dos program?
(general, program, font, memory, screen, misc tabs)

for the dll file I'll have to look at it tommorow
but I know the command.pif file does not have the normal properties for a dos program.

Try creating a new shortcut to command.com - rename current command.pif to something else then rename this new shortcut to command.pif.

ok, i'll try it, but i also get this error when running command.com direct

didn't work, anybody else an idea what else i can try or is there no other option then a format

Right-click My Computer and go to Properties. Click on the Performance tab.

1) Do you see any messages about "MS-DOS compatibility mode"?

2) Do you have other Win98 PC's on the network that are running the login script just fine?
