I had a WinXP SP2 machine that a user thought he shut down but instead, he put it in Standby Mode and walked away. He is the only user of the PC and no one else entered the room after he walked away.

However, when he returned and pressed the power button to bring the PC out of Standby, he received a message stating that "other users are logged onto this computer, shutting down will cause them to lose data".

Is this typical? I fear that someone may have hacked into his computer. He has Windows Firewall activated but his wireless network is not secure.

you can het this at times due to Shares, built in or otherwise.

I wouldn't trip too much if your machine is secure, patched and up to date.

Yes, shared printer can often do this as well

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

He has a USB printer that is not shared over the network. Also, I checked his locak disk and there are no shared folders (there is the C$ admin share, of course and whatever else is built into Windows).

Well, at the very least this will inspire him to take further steps toward security like encrypting his files and disabling his local guest account.

the print queue is an open share, guest account is disabled unless you enable it, C$, D$ and system$ shares are there too.
