Hello all.

I'm having trouble doing some pretty basic commands mainly related to the "network" command while trying to config OSPF with a multiple areas. Can configure for a whole area but not on a per interface basis. My Versions are....

2501====IOS (tm) 3000 Software (IGS-J-L), Version 11.1(8)
4000=IOS (tm) 4500 Software (C4500-IS-M), Version 11.2(22)

Also, if this is a problem what is the best way to upgrade these routers? Thanks in advance.

I would respectfully suggest your post might be better placed in the "Cisco: Routers" forum - this has nothing to do with ethernet, per se.

Having said that, can you post your sample router configs (to the cisco forum) so we can get a better idea of what you're trying to do?
You say you can configure 'a whole area but not on a per interface basis' - I'm not sure what you mean. Each interface on one router can be in a different area so long as the remote router off every interface is:
- correctly connected and in the same subnet (without addresses clashing)
- in the same area-id at both ends
- using the same authentication password (if authentication is being used)
- using the same "Hello" and "Dead" timers
- using the same stub area flags
See for more info.
One common mistake that some people forget is that the "network" statement's mask uses the reverse notation to, say, a static route's mask. That is, if you use 10.x.x.x addressing on one or more interfaces and you want to say "OSPF, advertise 10-dot-anything addresses from this router to be in area 0", then the commands to configure this would be:
enable
conf t
router ospf 1 (or whatever your instance value is)
network 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 area 0

Notice that if you wanted a '10-dot-everything' static route, it would be something like "ip route 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 fa0/0", so the masks are 'the other way around'. Hope this is a useful start...
