I am a brand new MAC user. Trying to network my powerbook G4 to my PC with a NIC to NIC cable connection. I have turned sharing on on the MAC and tried to user Internect Connection Sharing on the Win2K box to act as a DHCP server. When the Mac starts it never gets an IP from the Win2K box. So, I set the NIC settings on the MAC to use DHCP with Manual IP and set the IP to the same subnet as the Windows box. Now I can see the MAC in Network Neighborhood on the PC, but nothing I have tried will get the MAC to connect to the PC using the Connect to Server tool. I get an error -36 when attempting this.
I then tried a command line smbclient connection. After issuing smbclient -L hostname, I get the following error:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
I know I am using the correct password and user name.
I know in Linux you have to tell it to use encrypted passwords to connect to Windows via Samba. Is there an equivalent on the MAC?
Again, I have been using a MAC for two days, so I am definately on the uphill side of the learning curve.

I've had similar probs with ICS just trying to get two PCs to connect!

Try setting up a new account on the PC using the exact same user name as on the Mac (I'm assuming you're using OSX on the mac), set the password, then once the new user is created on the PC, try to connect to it.
I think the error message you are getting means Win has thrown your logon out.

Are you connecting to the internet via a dial-up modem or via ADSL, if the latter then it may be easier to use a cheap router with eternet ports - you don't need the PC on to connect to the 'net then.

you must share some folders for the mac to see the pc

nrb501, Pastor Rob,
Thanks for the replies. I'm afraid I missed them earlier. I did finally get it working but I had to set the MAC (using OS X 10.2.4) to DHCP with manual IP. For some reason it just would not get an IP from the DHCP server run by ICS. Strange. As it turned out I couldn't share the internet connection anyway as I am on the road and forced to use the oh so wonderful Compuserve 2000 (AKA AOL) dialup. It doesn't seem to be shareable across ICS, but I can download files from the PC directly to the make so that is all I really needed.
Thanks again.
Derek
