I just added 3GB (1,1,1) of memory to my motherboard but now the OS(windows server 2k) will not boot up, only the intel desktop splash screen appears and the screen hangs there. I have tried different combinations on the memory installation but I get the same result. I also tried 2GB and a 256mb and same result. If I only add 2GB then the OS boots up fine. The board has 3 slots. I have contacted Kingston and they said that the problem would be with the motherboard intel D845WN. However Intel does not support this board. Has anyone seen this before or can direct me to a solution.

Does the machine have a separate graphics card - or is it onboard? I recently saw similar situation (XP Home) with the onboard graphics enabled. Fortunately I was also adding a new graphics card, and it worked fine with graphics card installed (no, I don't know why - something to do with how the shared memory is allocated? Perhaps with 3GB, the shared bit's out of range?).

What speed is the memory? Have you upgraded your bios as there was some issues with this motherboard with memory configurations, mainly with using only one DIMM but you may have found another issue.

Be sure to look in the BIOS settings - see what they are with the memory that works, and when you change the memory, be sure to look in the BIOS again, see if there are clues there on what's happening.
Sometimes a motherboard will only accept certain values or combinations of memory. It might not accept more than two 1GB memory modules. The three memory sockets might only be for 512MB or smaller modules. Find the documentation for the motherboard - very likely your answer is there.

That board can handle 3Gb of memory as per the specifications, although looking through the BIOS is a great idea.

Intel Board#: D845WN AAA64181-204
133MHz Non-ECC CL3

I was told by kingston that there might be an update to the motherboard but I dont know where I would get it from. I have looked through the intel website but I cannot find anything there.

The graphics board is seperate.

I will try to look in the bios also.

Just thought of something, I assumed that the 3 sticks of memory is matched. Is that the case? Or are they different types of memory?

This just occurred to me - sometimes only certain combinations of RAM will work in a server. Back when a 486-66 was hot, I had an Everex Megacube, which used 4MB modules. It came with 32MB (8 modules), but to increase, you couldn't put in 4 more, you had to add 8 more. I'm thinking that your system works with 2GB of RAM, but not with 3, it might work only with 2GB or 4GB. Since you only have 3 slots, you might need to back off to 2GB, or find a 2GB module, and have 2,1,1 for a total of 4GB. I know Win2K Server handles 4GB - I have an IBM Netfinity (vintage 2001) running that much. To be safest (if you can afford it), putting in two matching 2GB modules would be the most reliable combination - but trying 2,1,1 would be worth a shot.

check the specifications for all sticks of memory it maybe you have some lets say needing 2.5v and one that needs 2.9v, and bios is set to 2.6v, which would cause a similar hang up, also as stated above, check memory settings in bios and set them to auto.

just couple of things to try, ive had similar probs with OCZ memory which in thats case was rated @ 2.8-2.9v and bios was only giving it 2.5-2.6v.

For information, BIOS updates, etc. do a google search. There is a lot of info out there. I did a search on D845WN and google return 72,000+ results.
