Oracle Reports Server with error 186

I recently installed Oracle 8174 Reports server on a Windows 2000 server. All the other components work including Forms and Reports but the reports server that I created will not allow me to start the service. I recieve the following error:

"The Oracle Reports Server [RepServer] service terminated with service-specific error 186. "

Anyone have any idea on this one?

Do you have multiple Oracle homes? If so, set TNS_ADMIN variable to point to the directory containing valid tnsnames.ora file. This file should include both tns aliases for database connections and report server connections. Something like

RepServer,RepServer.world=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1949))

Of course you may add this entry to the "active" tnsnames.ora file, if i know which is.

Thanks for your help. Turns out that line does need to added to the "Active" home tnsnames.ora file in order to start the service.

I'm running into the same problem and my tnsnames file is exactly what you posted. The wierd thing is that it works the first time in a loop, then dies at the second attempt. Any suggestions?

Actually I was only able to get it to work on my home PC. The original install that I did at the client's site doesn't seem to be corrected.

Have you tried setting a specific log in account for that service? Sometimes it's just the user that has insuficient rights.

Is the service just stopping after a certain amount of time?

I finally got it to work but it's flaky. Still trying to determine why.
