Guys-

I just got on with a team that is talking about moving to Oracle RAC.

Anyone know where I can find resources (preferably not from Oracle) where everything about Oracle Rac is explained including pros and cons?

Im hoping to get a better understanding of what it is before I start asking stupid questions.

Thanks,

dj

DJ,

Oracle RAC stands for "Real Application Cluster". It typically employs a multi-node shared-storage cluster architecture with a cluster database and shared cache. The objective of the configuration is to overcome the limitations of traditional shared-nothing and shared-disk approaches to provide highly scalable and available database solutions for your business applications.

RAC also tends to be fast...they hold every record Oracle TPC-C in the last four years.

Now that we have the documented the marketing perspective, you can read a non-Oracle evaluation of the technology, "The Reality Behind Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) Marketing Messages" in the form of a .pdf file at

I wouldn't bother reading the link that Dave has provided - Microsoft are hardly likely to say there is anything right about Oracle technology. (I did read some of it but it was 'typical' to say the least - "SQLServer rules - OK")

I don't know of any independant reports on RAC, but I'm sure Google is your friend :)
