Can the Oracle Names Server version 8 (Oracle 8) be used to store database name of Oracle 7.3 and let its client using SQL Net 2.3 access it without problem. I'm not sure if there is a conflict between SQL Net 2.3 and Net80. I am thinking of using Oracle NamesServer80 in providing the connect string instead of TNSNAMES.ORA; i.e., we are currently using TNSNAMES.ORA in connecting to different Oracle Databases version 7.3. I do not want to use the version of Names Server provided by the Oracle7.3 because it is hard to configure as compared to the latest version.

I don't think there's a problem with that, my understanding is that it's possible to use net8 name server in exactly the way you want to.<br>

If you look in the system documentation (Net8: Getting Started), page 4-6, you will find that SQL*Net 2.x clients can use Net8 components to connect to Oracle7 and Oracle8 databases, even through the Names Server. I would recommend you read this entire book (it's fairly short).

Speaking of which, can you point me to where can I find configuration info on Names Server provided by the Oracle7.3.
We would like to move some Db's to other servers but can't find the information on how to reconfigure oracle name server.

Thanks, ~jdk
