Other than the alert log how can I monitor the health of an Oracle instance? I am useing HP Openview Operations as a monitoring tool and do not wish to purchase additional monitoring tools. (Maybe OEM)

I'm sure you can get an Oracle plugin for HP-Openview but it will probably cost you.

We use BigBrother ( which is free provided you are not using your servers directly to make money. e.g. if you are an ISP or the apps running on the servers generate money (like E-commerce) you will have to pay. But if it's a back-office operation it's free. If you use BigBrother you can get the Oracle monitoring script from here:

Not 100% sure what you mean by "health". The statspack stuff is free (try searching in for details) and if you install a 9i client on a workstation somewhere, you have some GUI tools:

QUOTE from Turkbear:
The 9i version of DBAstudio ( now part of Enterprise Manager Console) has dynamic info on all current sessions and the database itself..

I know this is the 8i group, but a 9i client ( specifically 9.2 ) can be used with 8i databases and the newer versions of the toolset make it worthwhile, if possible, to upgrade the client.
END QUOTE; DaPi - no silver bullet
