Hi,
I am running Oracle 8.1.7 over HP-UX 11.00.
The database has just gone down with
ORA-01115: IO error reading block from file 9 ( block # 299188 )
ORA-01110: data file 9: '/ord/data/datafile001.dbf'
ORA-27072: skgfdisp: I/O error
HP-UX Error: 5 : I/O Error
Additional information: 299188

It cannot be restarted. I have checked the syslog in unix and used dd if=/dev/dsk/c1t1d0 of=/dev/null bs=64k
which has confirmed I have a disk problem. I am currently backing up the system prior to running fsck on the system to try and repair the error.

However being the eternal pessimist I don't expect it to help.

What are my options? We are not running hot backups. Is my only option once the disk is fixed to revert to the previous good backup or do I have other options?

Any advice or just moral support at this stage would be welcomed.

Regards

SOL
I'm only guessing but my guess work generally works for me.

Sol. The bad news is I think your pessimism is well-placed as far as the disk problem is concerned. The good news is that at least you have a previous good backup. It would be even better if you have all the archivelogs since that last good backup. Do you?

I have seen methods of recovering from block corruption and will try to dig them out. In the meantime, good luck.

Thanks for the well wishes Ken, unfortunately due to cheapskate managers and restricted disk space the server is running in NOARCHIVELOG mode which means that last night is about the best I can hope for I think.

Thanks for that Ken, there is a lot of good information in there that has sparked off some ideas I can try.

No problem, and thanks for the star. If there's anything else come back and I'm sure someone will be able to help further.
