I'm trying to find a copy of Oracles Client Install that I can distribute with my application. I have their main CD that contains all of the various installs (Admin, Programmer, etc) however I want to get this onto one CD and only install the Client version. Any ideas where I can get this? (Haven't been able to find it on their website - however I may be looking in the wrong spot.)

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Brian,

Before you work out the physical logistics of all this, I recommend you confirm the licensing issues. First of all, I am not aware that Oracle has any accommodation for third-party usage for even their client installation without the third parties arranging licensing. For inhouse distribution, you certainly can arrange for licensing to accommodate your distribution. But it was the licensing issue that forced us to migrate our application to MySQL (free third-party distribution).

If you can resolve the licensing issues, one option that we found very hassle-free for our in-house users has been to use InstallShield(r) to take a master installed client and replicate the install elsewhere.

I'm not aware that Oracle offers a "client-only" distribution; our clients have always resided on the full-version CDs (w/server software).

That's what we are doing now. Problem is that we are a vendor and sometimes our software goes out to customers that have other oracle apps running on their client machines. Problem with one installshield is catching all the different versions of Oracle - seeing as the locations of the key files are different (not to mention the whole multiple oracle home issues.)

I was hoping that Oracle had a program that could set all of this up for you. You'd figure that they'd have the best chance of getting it all right.

For Windows, Oracle does provide a separate client-only download option that's significantly smaller than the full-blown install.

You can create a response file for the Oracle Universal Installer that will allow the OUI to be run without human intervention. If you use InstallShield to install the rest of your application, you can have it make a command-line call to install the Oracle client as well.

That's EXACTLY what I want. Any chance I can get your help in locating this download? (I can't find it on their website.) <Geeze - I'm getting excited about finding an Oracle Install.)

Start at (at some point, you'll need a free account if you don't already have one).
- Click on the Downloads link in the upper right-hand corner nav bar
- Click on the Oracle 9i database (or Oracle 8i if that's the flavor you're after)
- Choose the proper operating system
- Say yes to the export questions (assuming you're not planning on building a nuclear power plant control system that you'll be exporting to Syria)
- One of the downloads will be a client-only installation.

Justin -

You are da man!!!! Exactly what I am looking for. Feel kind of embarrased that I didn't see this from the get-go. Oh well, we've all had those days. (I seem to get more than my share)

Thanks again - you just made my life so much easier!
