Is anyone using RMAN and ARCserve to backup the archived redo logs on Unix? How about any other scheme and ARCserve? I am looking for a good way to do this. I currently have ARCserve but not the Oracle client for it. If there is a good way to do this without the client then that would be great, otherwise I have to ask management for th $$$ to get the Oracle client.

If you are using the Arcserve Oracle client to backup archived redo logs, how are you scheduling it - through ARCserve or cron? Will it even work when scheduled from cron? The ARCserve docs leave a lot to the imagination on this subject.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi,

My UNIX administrator runs an export of his hot data to another location on his server, from which we back it up using the UNIX agent.

I understand the export feature is contained within Oracle, and can be scheduled with cron.

Exporting is an alternative to having to buy the Oracle Agent, but it involves a certain amount of downtime for the database, which will vary depending on its size.

If your application is a 24/7 system and can't sustain downtime, then I think the only other way to go is to shell out for the Agent...
