Can anyone give me a synopsis of the best way to go about decommissioning an Oracle 9 database, thanks.

Hi,
By decommissioning what exactly do you mean?

...Then issue a "SHUTDOWN ABORT" on the Oracle 9i. <grin>

There is a process method, like archiving the data, preserving log files and so on, that is what I meant.

Once you have the new Oracle 10g instance functioning against your migrated Oracle 9i data, the process of an orderly decommission would be, at minimum:[ul][li]SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE (of the Oracle 9i instance)[/li][li]Operating system copying of all database files including:[/li][ul][li]Database data files[/li][li]On-line redo log files[/li][li]Database control files[/li][li]and, although technically not part of the database, it is a good idea to also archive the init<SID>.ora parameter file.[/li][/ul][/ul]As an added measure of safety and convenience, before shutting down the Oracle 9i instance, I always do an export of the database. I, personally, prefer to do the export schema by schema in case someone needs just one of the Oracle users imported somewhere.

Let us know your outcome.
