I'm going to be doing an upgrade on an Option 11C on Mon.3/31/03. Going from a RLS 23 to RLS 25. RLS 25.40 I think. Anyway, all of the goodies should arrive from the vendor tommorrow, including,I'm told, all of the documentation to do this with. A friend of mine loaned me a PCMIA card to do the back-up with? Says I put in a slot on the front of one of the processor card? Can you tell I'm just an X-11 gal not I&M? Does anyone know where I can get manuals, literature, etc. so I can read up on this before hand? Thanks.

This is easy for us doing it daily.
I dont think this should be done by a user. It should be done by a maintainer.
It's so many things that should be taken into consideration when doing this.

Do you have a working PCMCIA? do you have the new patches?
Do you have the new valus for callregistres and so on.
What do you do if it goes wrong? Do you have the necessary stuff to be able to install your present release again?

Sennback, thanks for your input, but I am the maintainer. Yes, as stated, I have a PCMCIA card - mine loaned to me to use to back up the system. I know I will be getting a PCMCIA with the new software. Now, does anyone have a source where I can get documentation and read up on this upgrade process before I have to do it......and I (me) have to do it. Thanks

This may be easier than you think. If this upgrade was ordered normally you will receive a new PCMCIA card with the new SW and patches preinstalled. As for you having a blank PCMCIA you shoudl download the PCMCIA application form Nortels PIC website and download your existing and new SW release to this program and have it ready. Here is the basic steps to upgrade.

1- Take backups of your 11c (edd in ld 43 and xbk then xvr in ld 143 to your laptop). Print out existing patches in ld 22 by ISSP and SLT to get your existing ISM parameters.
2- Insert the new PCMCIA card in the faceplate of the SSC. Then press the INIT (black) button on the SSC. Watch the screen to make sure that all goes well. You will see a prompt that tells you to press CTRL-I to eneter setup form PCMCIA. You want to hold CTRL and press I then it will start booting from the SW delivery card (PCMCIA). Once booted to the utility you will see choices. You want to goto to utilities and update the FLASH ROM (more than likely). This is basically like your BIOS on your desktop PC if it is not comapatible with your new OS (release) then it will not run correctly. Once you step through the flash upgrade it will reboot and once again watch for the CTRL-I prompt and enter the setup utility again. This time you will need to run through the actual SW upgrade. It should step you through. One thing to watch is make sure that you DOUBLE check all ISM parameters. As in your existing (printout you did earlier) and the new ones. I always double check these, make sure all existing packages are included and that all ISM parameters match to what you have and what was ordered. Also make sure when stepping through the upgrade you make sure to include the optional packages and double check the AUX ID to see if it changed (sometimes they do). If you donot check these and input them correctly it will tell you that your keycodes are invalid. If you get this try reentering them a couple times and then it will bring you back to the setup menu. So that you can go back through your configuration. It is simple just follow the book step by step for database install. Once the upgrade is done and everything goes correctly it should convert the existing database for you. Once it is done and you can login normally check your system to make sure the correct database is in there. This is what I usually do after an upgrade on any Meridian, this is not a Nortel procedure but my own. I have done more than 100 upgrades/installs on this product line and after awhile you get your routine. I would suggest you at least do some minimal testing. ***I always check my Patches, ISM parameters, ELNK (if it is IP enabled), etc... Basically do a sanity check on it. Make calls in,out, to VM etc.. Once everything looks good then I goto ld 43 and do an EDD and then to ld 143 and do an xbk and xvr (donot overwrite old files that are still on your laptop). This will give you fresh backups of your new system. The I usually INIT the system to make sure that everything is working properly. I watch for any errors whle it goes through the INI sequence. Once it comes all the way up and you can login. I do another sanity check and then log back out. I then power down the system completely. I have averted many-a-disaster by these procedures. i then run a small maintenance on the system (checking cables and cards, including daughterboards, to make sure they are seated all the way. Once I get done going through the system. I then power it back up and watch for errors again. If all is clear then I go back through and do my final testing (basically the same but more thorough as the sanity check), test all types of calls and VM (including MSG light). This is my testing procedure not Nortels but it may save you some headaches later.****
Anyways make sure you check and most likely update the flash on the SSC. This is missed by alot of technicians. Follow the book step by step for the SW upgrade. With the information here it should shed some light on the NTP and help you through this procedure. If something fails in the SW upgrade, read the NTP and it tells you step by step what to do and how to do it. Just make sure you have clean backups both internally (edd) and exterbally (xbk and xvr). If you have never done this I would try to have someone (friend or tech) available for support that has done this before. That way if something does fail you can get some technical assistance.
One last note: I forgot to ask what (if any) peripherial applications (IE: Call Pilot, ITG, RLC, MIRAN, Symposium etc...)you are running. As there might be specific patches that are required for these applications. If there is you will have to have access to Nortels PEP and patch library. As in there may be patches for the PBX and PEP/s for the application itself. If this is the case I would have a Vendor onsite to assist in the upgrade. That way you can get the experience on this but yet have the access needed to get these patches. That way in the future you will have the knowledge to know what you need. Good Luck

I maintain this PBX. I WILL be doing the upgrade. I have the vendor if needed on T&M. I repeat if anyone has a resource to documents I can read before this I would really appreciate the info

Thanks. BMiles. Need clarification on "you shoudl download the PCMCIA application form Nortels PIC website and download your existing and new SW release to this program and have it ready. Maybe put it another way? Thanks again.
I'm in Ft.Lauderdale and this upgrade will take place in Miami. Hey ACEWARLOCK want to help?

Hi,

BMiles very nice comment....

But if I remember correct (It's been awhile) you must SYSLOAD the switch to get the CTRL-I to enter the setup...
