Option 11c, PRI and FAX problems

Howdy

First of all, my apologies if I don't have some nomenclature correct; I am an absolute newbie on this phone stuff.

I have an Option 11c that is connected to the outside world via PRI. But the PRI doesn't come directly into the switch, it hits an Adtran Atlas 550 that also connects w/ our LAN. This serves as a backup for our data T1.

We had a few issues when the system was installed with timing between CO, the Atlas, and the switch (the Atlas would show no connection between it and one or the other parts, I would power cycle the Atlas and things would be hunky-dorey for a few days) but all of that finally was hammered-out about 2-3 months ago.

Now recently, we have a lot of problems receiving faxes, especially multi-page faxes. They error with a communications failure. We also have problems with modems (But we use them so rarely, it is almost a non-issue. Just putting the info out for troubleshooting.) We have eliminated the obvious: replaced the fax machines,
routed the extensions through different pairs, rewired jacks, moved the extensions to different TN's, received the faxes on different machines. And we can send multi-page faxes extension to extension with no problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? We have a couple of offices that all but live or die by the fax machine and they are getting frustrating with having their faxes sent to the only direct-to-CO fax we have on-site.

CHECK YOUR CLOCK STATUS IN LD 60 MAKE SURE IT'S NOT FREE RUNNING, IF IT IS SWITCH IT THE THE PRIMARY CLOCK SOURCE

I second PerryPJ's suggestion.. MOST of the time modem/fax issues on a T1 based facility (t1 or PRI trunking) are related to timing/clock source issues. Since you indicate that was a problem at the beginning, most likely it has happened again.

Does the clock have to be disabled before it can be changed?

I attempted from LD 60

SSCK PCK 0

with no results.

Check your d-channel in LD17 to make sure it is set for USR (not NET) and external clock (EXT) if the Adtran is passing the C/O's clock to the switch. The Adtran should be set for network timing as well as the DSX port on the Adtran. This can cause clock slippage until the maintenance threshold is reached.

Actually, an email from our Verizon tech confirms that the span is slipping and there is an issue w/ the Atlas settings. Happily, it is a warranty/maintenance issue and he has to make it good.

I appreciate all the replies. This stuff is pretty interesting; I wish I had the time to understand it.

If you want to track on primary Clock the command is

TRCK PCK

for secondary clock

TRCK SLCK

all in LD 60

just using ssck 0 tells you the status of the clock.
