Hello ALL,

We have 3.5 GB RAM Compaq DL 580 server
4 x 36GB Ultra SCSI HDD
10 x 72GB Ultra SCSI HDD
Win2K Adv and E2K Enterp

We're considering:
2 x 36GB (RAID 1) for OS and Page file
2 x 36GB (RAID 1) for Logs
10 x 72GB (RAID 10) for Info store

Please give advise on the optimum combination of RAID and file locations. THANKS!

Yikes that is a lot of storage!

Hopefully that is hardware RAID. Looks like a really good solution. You might want to consider putting one of the 10 drives as a paging drive but that cuts you down a bit.

10 x 72GB on RAID10 will give you about 275GB available. 36GB for logs should be sufficient unless you are huge.

Put the apps with the OS.

You'll need the /3GB switch.

Check out the disk patency of the RAID10 using perfmon and track your IOPS to see if the disk set is fast enough for your users. RAID5 over that many disks might be slightly faster but you may not need it. I know it is for Exchange 2003 but it amounts to the same thing.

It all sounds fine.
Few comments:
- You may consider having a hot spare disk.
- Also you may configure duplexing for the first two mirrors.
