Hi,

Does anybody if there is an optimum buffer size for the -C flag in cpio when using dds4 tapes.

There is undoubtedly an optimum buffer size but I doubt many will know it off the top of their head. It is however very easy to check; just time a run of different buffer sizes until you get the fastest.
