Hi, I have a custom App using SQL 8.5, My problem is that this App misbehaves under load, my concern is that I have not optimised the Pervasive settings. I have just installed the default settings. I have around 60 users logged in under peak load. Should I be changing the default settings to increase Threads and timeouts ect.

Any help would be appreciated, or if you could point me to a reference so I can check what each setting does and the +ves and -ves of each setting.

Thanks

What operating systems are we talking about here?

Also, what do you mean by "this App misbehaves"?
THe best resource for the settings is going to the be the documentation.

Does the application use ODBC, Btrieve, OLEDB, or another interface?
WHat's the application doing when it "misbehaves under load"?

Via Citrix Presentation 3

Misbehave's in that the App Freezes for random users, and, after the citrix session has been terminated and the session loged out, then when they or others try to log into the app they get through the login security phase but then the app freezes. After several attempts to log in eventually the user can log back in. At first the freezes appeared to be when the users were printing. (via Citrix and Crystal reports) but the freeze has also been happening when the user have not been attempting to print.

Where "specifically" in the mound of documentation. Even searching Google with "pervasive optimization" and other variants does not find specific setting information.

An example of what I am trying to find out is ...

What value should I put in the "communication threads" setting under the pervasive control centre, server, configeration, performance tuning section? AND what are the pros and cons of changing it from the default value?

Thanks for the replies so far.

Here's some performance info:

Freezes usually wouldn't be a "communication threads" issue. When this "freeze" occurs, does the PCC fail to connect? If so, what error is seen? If the freeze is mainly happening when printing, make sure the the Network cards aren't "caching" cards. I've seen, in lower traffic networks, where caching cards hold the information too long and it looks like the app freezes..

The PCC does fail to connect when the freeze occurs.

Thanks for the urls, I will check them out.

I have not waited for it to give an error, it just sits on the screen and eventually says "not responding" so then I just end the the task via task manager.

How often would you recommend rebooting the server? I am not a great fan of setting automatic/scheduled reboots, even though I know obout memory leakage. I reboot this dataserver every fortnight give or take a day or two.

Thanks for the replies Mirtheil, the URL's give me the exact information I was looking for. I can experiment over the next few weeks with adjusting some of these setting, now that I know exactly what it is they do.

Thanks again.
