A partial answer I'm afraid - go to the microsoft XP site and search for the complete answer onthe XP hardware forum if you don't follow this.

This is known and the first thing to try is a registry edit - only do this if you know what you are doing! (Better instructions are on the Microsoft forum.) Go into regedit and search for 'upper filter'. You will find a key with an entry for upper filter and lower filter. Delete these and hope it works. Don't try it unless you are confident and make a backup point first.

Second thing is if you have an Athlon system on a via chipset. Go to and get latest the 4-in-1 drivers.

Sorry about the half-baked instructions - I know how frustrating this problem is and I don't have the full set with me.

Good luck

Rick
