Hi All, this is the former 573dawn, and I need some expert opinions. As many of you know, our IPO has been a nightmare from day one. Here is is nearly a year later and we still haven't resolved the issue of dropped calls. Anyway, our vendor is once again making suggestions that, as far as I'm concerned, do not necessarily address the problem, SO, I want the take from you all, the experts who have helped me solve all but this one...

Vendor recommends flat network topography; I have 4 locations each in different address space. I see no reason to go flat with 4 locations connected by PTP T1, and I'm not sure why he thinks we should go that way.

Vendor thinks we should route internet traffic over our routers; I think this is a horrible idea, our internet traffic is 100% separate from our routers now, each location has it's own internet connection, routed locally. Why add traffic to a network the vendor seems to think is so insuffucient anyway?

Vendor thinks we should go DHCP for all but printers, servers, etc; I am not a fan of DHCP, and I see absolutely no purpose in converting. What the heck does that have to do with dropped calls anyway?

Vendor thinks maybe we should bring in a 3rd party, not necessarily Avaya, to assess the network; I think we should bring in Avaya and let them do the network assessment that the vendor should have done in the first place.

Sorry it's so long, but I really need the expert opinions of other Avaya folks on this. Thanks! Dawn

Avaya does not recommend a flat network.
Keep your internet traffic separate.
DHCP would not effect dropped calls. (DHCP is for ease of administration of Ip addressing)
If your going to a network assessment specifically to address Voip then i would use Avaya.

I would change vendors IMO.

djuplift, thanks :) I think the exact same thing. All I want is for the vendor to do the network assessment that Avaya requires. So it's post install, who cares? They can simulte the traffic and give us a better direction, IMHO, than anyone else. I just need some backing from my friends here to present to my boss :)

My opinion - 1 of 3 things possible - I have implemented many IPO SCNs with PtP T-1, Frame Relay, VPN over Internet, etc...

1. Poor planning or setup of IPO by current BP
2. LAN WAN gear has a problem somewhere either hardware or QoS policies - if BP didn't implement this part, they should have had the assessment done
3. Hardware trouble somewhere - either IPO, LAN/WAN gear, or service provider?

or there is a 4th possibility - I did have this happen once
Customer had built their own SQL database over the years - this thing had become a monster - we implemented IPO with IP sets extended to a branch office over T-1 - everything seemed to be working fine until someone would open up a IN/OUT board on this database and poof! Every call would drop....Took a better part of the day to find out what was going on - once it was found - we made an adjustment to the QoS policies and all was good.

hey dawn,
check your email girl!

ACA - Implement IP Office
ACS - Implement IP Office
