I sing your praises for going with the greatest web server on the planet but you won't get a pat on the back for XP. it's not just because I'm a linux guy but because I think a server should be just that. If you spend time doing all the fun stuff XP lets you do, it's going to take resources away from the server. Buy a cheap box and install linux, then run your web, mail, ftp and other servers on it.
Ace,
I feel you on the Linux, I too am an aspiring Linux nerd, but I can't get anyone else in the office to even attempt using it, there scared. We already have Win 2k server for mail and ftp. Just need something to dedicate to a web-server. I actually found out today that we are going to be running it on a Win 98 machine, which is no good. Personally I would rather have 95.
W95 is no better than W98 for web serving. Neither has a network stack sufficiently robust for the task.
Just do like I used to do. Install Linux and Samba, then put the machine on your office's Mi¢ro$oft network. Most of them will never know the difference.
Win NT, XP and 2000 only allow 10 simultaneous connections, unless you buy additional seats, at about $100 each, on average, I think. I priced it once at $2,300 to buy 2000 Server and 15 additional seats. Linux is free and unlimited.
