I have a computer that wont load the operating system.. the error message reads "operating system not found".

Assuming everything is installed properly this is usually a result of a controller card problem. What kind of system is it and what is in it?

Just happen out of the blue? Partition available and active?

It was originally a Windows 98 and was recently upgraded to XP. It just happened out the blue. The computer makes a continuous noise when it's on... kind of like a chirping noise.

Sounds like the hard drive has decided to not read any more.

I think the hard drive is done. The is a beeping sound when the machine is on, and someone told me that IBM machines had bad hard drives.

IF you need data from the drive you can try this. It will work sometimes. Place drive in sealed plastic bad and put in freezer a few hours. Yes the Freezer. This shrinks the drive just a bit. If you have a crack on it it may push it together by the cold. Take out of freezer and immediatly try to recover any data. thia is usually a one shot deal. Its worth a shot.

OK so IBM sent me a new hard drive.. expept now i get a "missing operating system".. I trie booting the machine with a boot disk (WIN98), and I get a NTLDR missing.. can I throw this machine out the window now?

Simply try reloading WIN98 back on the disk. Put the WIN98 cd in the drive then reboot the computer.

NTLDR? Do you by chance have a floppy disk in the drive?

Good Luck,

What did you load onto the new drive? NTLDR is only needed for XP. Is this an upgrade from 98 to XP CD, or a XP complete CD? If it is an upgrade, you'll have to FDISK and fromat - install 98 - upgrade to XP.

NTLDR is used in Win 2000 Pro and Win XP. Possibly NT but I'm not sure. You should do a full format of the drive and reload whichever OS you need. Dont do a low level format or you will still have the same problem.
