I am trying to install Windows XP pro onto a laptop for a friend.

The previous install was illeagal and therefore had frozen her out. Using a windows XP disk I was able to delete the exiting partitions, Re Partition the drive and format them with NTFS.

When it came to installing to OS the PC suddenly shut down. Now whenever I turn it on it starts to boot and with 5 to 20 seconds will shut down. The only way I can get the system started again is to remove the battery as pressing the power button or holding it down does nothing.

Anyone any idea what is causing this I have a feeling there is a problem with the CDROM driver

Cheers

M

is it, by any chance, a Toshiba laptop?

anyways, it sounds more like a power issue, rather than a driver. Especially if you have to remove the battery. Try installing the OS while the battery is unplugged, and its running from the mains adapter

Try downloading and running Knoppix Linux from CD. See how that goes. To clear a laptop, remove the battery, unplug from mains, press and hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds.

Another thought would be to remove all the data from the drive first, run once from CD to clear the drive.

You might also try removing and re-seating the memory modules.
I run across this type of issue a lot with laptops. Most of the time, these mysterious sudden reboots cease once the modules are reseated. Back in the day, this was called 'chip creep.'

Also, it is possible one of the RAM modules is becoming flakey.

Thanks for all the replies guys but the first suggestion was correct the battery doesn't seem to want to charge so problem solved
