Has anyone been successful in getting the locality/canonical dial settings working right in the USA? I'd really like to get the phones setup right so I can just click from the call log and dial a number - like it's supposed to work! All of the examples I've seen have been for Germany. :(

OK, I had some revalations last night when I was supposed to be working on stuff I'm supposed to be working on....

First, there are two separate playing fields here - I did not understand that!

The first playing field is the Call Log, which will show the calls received, dialed, etc.

The second playing field is the Phone's Directory.

Last night, while screwing around with the canonical dialing settings in the DLS, I started entering some not so random data into the fields, and I started getting results. Any new number I entered into the dialing directory was automatically converted to the proper format for dialing. I imported my whole Outlook contact list into the phone and was literally jumping up and down like a little kid when I was able to place calls right out of the directory.

Unfortunately I found a flaw in my logic, and I don't know if it was actually something I did or if it is something that Siemens has screwed up. They make references to the "local forms" and "public forms" - but I don't see a place where I can see how those are built or what they do. My problem is that it works fantastic as long as all the numbers are in my own AREA CODE!! When I import 10-digit numbers that have an area code different than mine it adds MY area code at the beginning. If I remove the area code from the settings then the 10-digit numbers that are not in my area code work fine, but if I try to import 7-digit numbers from outlook it does not prepend the area code (because I left it blank). The other thing is when I am trying to dial out local calls with 7 digits it insists on adding a 1 at the beginning, and if I remove the 1 from the nation field then it des not add it to the 10-digit numbers and they won't dial....

I'm very close on that part now - if anyone knows how to find and eidt or create new froms in the DLS for this purpose please share. There is nothing in the manual unless it's in the install manual I didn't look at.

As far as placing calls from the Call Log, I have come across some new information on that too, but I have not had time to test it, and I need to be vewwy vewwy careful with the settings so that I only affect MY OWN phone and don't go hosing up a live system!! I will report any success there as well )

In this case, form means format.

Code:
Internal Numbers Dial Form

Possible options:

Local Company Format
Always Add Node
Use External Number

External Numbers Dial Form

Possible options:

Local Public Format
National Public Format
International Public Format

Did you by chance see the secret decoder ring?

Code:
Canonical format

Example of a phone number in canonical format:

To dial phone numbers saved in canonical format, these must be made "dialable" using output rules or dialing properties. The various codes are recognized here as part of the phone number and, where applicable, replaced with the corresponding dial prefixes (see DP) or the external access code (see EA).

Table 17

Examples of number resolution:

Phone number saved in canonical format: LCC/IDP LAC/NDP LDC/EA Phone number dialed

Where are the formats defined? Can I edit them?

Here is my goal - phone dialing directory:

< 7-digits = dial as is (internal number)
= 7-digits = add 9 at beginning (local number 9 is not visible))
= 10-digits = add 9 + 1 at beginning (long distance 9 is not visible)
we don't do international

I have this working perfectly if:

< 7-digits dials
= 7-digits, assumes my own area code, and adds 9 + 1 + area code (mine) at beginning
= 10-digits (Only if my own area code), adds 9 + 1 at beginning

( = 10-digits (NOT my area code), adds 9 + 1 + MY area code at beginning. Result = 9-1-920-414-537-2104 Outcome = 9-1-920-414-5372

If I remove my own area code from the canonical dialing settings a 7-digit number comes out 9-1-123-4567 and fails because of the added 1

I'm really close - I just wish I could see and edit those format specifications into something called "internal form", "local form", "national form".
