hi all,

I want to compile and install openssh-3.0.2p1.tar.gz
on my server. My problem is, that this server is not
located in the same city I am and I usually use ssh
to login to this server.

Does anybody knows, whether it's possible (or maybe not
that unhealthy) to install a new openssh version without
deinstalling the old first?

thanks in advance
greetings markus

specify a different install directory such as /opt/OBSDssh3 at the time when you launch ./configure

i recommend that you put etc under that directory as well.

after make and make install, cd to the etc subdir and edit the sshd_config file to make it listen on port 2200 for example.

then start the new daemon and connect to it from a remote host making sure using port 2200. when you are confident that it works, change the port number of the older version to something else and change the port number of the new version to the default 22.

reboot the computer if you want the change to take effect immediately or wait untill the next scheduled reboot.

alternatively, you can kill the daemons and restart them manually.
